Mark Scheifele scored his third goal of the game at 3:22 of overtime to lift Canada to a thrilling 6-5 victory over Norway on Thursday at the IIHF Men's Ice Hockey World Championship in Fribourg, Switzerland.
Scheifele, who also scored in the first and second periods, completed his hat trick after taking a pass from Connor Bedard and firing a shot past Norwegian goaltender Henrik Haukeland. The win improved Canada's record to 2-0-0-1 in Group B play.
Canada appeared to have the game in hand after taking a 5-2 lead midway through the third period, but Norway mounted a furious comeback. Goals by Andreas Martinsen, Mathias Trettenes, and Mats Rosseli Olsen in a span of 5:17 tied the game at 5-5 with 3:42 remaining in regulation.
Norway had a chance to win it in the final minute of regulation, but Canadian goaltender Jordan Binnington made a key save on a breakaway by Patrick Thoresen to force overtime.
In the extra session, Canada controlled the puck and Scheifele ended it with a quick release from the slot. Bedard and Owen Power assisted on the winning goal.
Dylan Guenther, Nick Paul, and Jamie Oleksiak also scored for Canada in regulation. Binnington made 28 saves for the win.
Norway got goals from five different players, with Haukeland stopping 35 shots in the losing effort.
Canada's next game is against Switzerland on Saturday.
