Regina Pat Canadians Triumph in U18 AAA Championship Series

The Regina Pat Canadians have solidified their dominance in Saskatchewan youth hockey by capturing their second straight provincial championship. On Saturday afternoon, the team defeated the Moose Jaw Winmar Warriors 5-2 in Game 5 of the Saskatchewan Male Under-18 AAA Hockey League final, securing the title in front of a packed crowd at Co-operators Arena.

A Hard-Fought Victory After Series Challenges

The championship victory did not come easily for the Pat Canadians. After building a commanding 2-0 series lead, Regina suffered back-to-back losses that forced the decisive Game 5. The team demonstrated remarkable resilience in bouncing back from those defeats to claim the championship trophy.

"The last two games where we lost, I think our leadership group really stepped up in the dressing room and addressed some things that we need to address," said forward Maddox Schultz following the championship game. "And I think we came out flying in the first period."

Fast Start Sets the Tone for Championship Win

Following a disappointing 5-1 loss in Game 4 on Friday night in Moose Jaw, the Pat Canadians faced a quick turnaround with Game 5 beginning at 12:30 p.m. the next day. Regina wasted no time establishing control of the contest, with Schultz scoring just 26 seconds into the game on a one-timer from Ethan Young.

"A lot of anger came out of us in that first period," Schultz explained. "Everyone was super angry and we kind of united as a team."

The early momentum continued as Kai Lanigan scored his first playoff goal midway through the first period to extend Regina's lead to 2-0. The period also featured a spectacular save by goaltender Adam Muntain, who robbed Moose Jaw's Ryan Gibbs with a sprawling glove stop that energized the Regina supporters.

Goaltending Excellence and Offensive Execution

Muntain's performance between the pipes proved crucial to the championship victory. The goaltender made 28 saves throughout the game, including several key stops that preserved Regina's advantage at critical moments.

"I saw the pass come from the other side and they went right back door, and I had no clue I was going to get through, so that's why I stopped in the middle, then dove back and it went right in my glove," Muntain described of his highlight-reel save. "I can't ask for more."

Despite Moose Jaw's Riley Brown scoring late in the first period to cut the deficit to 2-1, Regina maintained control throughout the contest. Ryker Doka added a power-play goal in the second period, followed by Malaki Martin's impressive individual effort early in the third that extended the lead to 4-1.

Closing Out the Championship Victory

The Pat Canadians effectively managed the game's final minutes, with Mahlon Wiley adding an empty-net goal with 2:31 remaining. Moose Jaw's Tyler Hudec scored with just 22 seconds left, but the outcome was already decided as Regina celebrated their back-to-back championship achievement.

The victory marks another milestone for the Regina Pat Canadians program, which has now established itself as a powerhouse in Saskatchewan's U18 AAA hockey landscape. The team's ability to overcome adversity in the championship series demonstrates the character and skill that propelled them to consecutive provincial titles.
