Viljami Marjala Shines in First AHL Season with 23 Points in 24 Games
Marjala a Bright Spot for Oilers Prospects in Bakersfield

While the recent recall of top scorer Quinn Hutson by the Edmonton Oilers leaves a void for their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors have a rising talent ready to help fill the gap. Viljami Marjala has emerged as a significant bright spot in the organization, making an immediate impact in his first North American professional season.

Marjala's Impressive Start in the AHL

In his debut campaign with the Bakersfield Condors, the 23-year-old Finnish forward has been a consistent offensive contributor. Through 24 games, Marjala has tallied an impressive 23 points, comprised of seven goals and 16 assists. This production places him third in team scoring, showcasing his quick adaptation to the league.

Although technically not an AHL rookie due to three prior seasons in the Finnish Elite League (Liiga), Marjala is experiencing a significant adjustment. He is re-acclimating to the smaller North American ice surface, having previously played his junior hockey for the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL.

A 'Pass-First' Playmaker Making Others Better

Condors head coach Colin Chaulk has been highly complimentary of Marjala's vision and hockey sense. "He's a pass-first player that is growing within the physical play just because the rink is smaller," Chaulk noted. He emphasized Marjala's innate ability to read the ice and elevate his linemates' play.

"His vision, instinctually knowing where players are, it's quite nice to see... he's making players better around him," Chaulk added, praising the prospect's playmaking prowess and awareness in open ice.

The Uphill Battle for an NHL Roster Spot

Despite his strong start, Marjala's path to the Edmonton Oilers roster presents a notable challenge, particularly at his natural centre position. The organization boasts considerable depth down the middle, a fact not lost on the coaching staff in Bakersfield.

Chaulk pointed to the internal competition as a driving force for development, citing examples like James Hamblin, who played 31 games for Edmonton during their Stanley Cup Final run, and Josh Samanski, who led his DEL team in scoring. "That's competition, and that's what pro athletes do every day," Chaulk stated.

The logjam extends to the NHL level, where the Oilers possess exceptional centre depth behind superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Currently, veterans like Adam Henrique and Curtis Lazar occupy bottom-six roles, with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also in the mix.

Marjala, a former fifth-round pick (159th overall) of the Buffalo Sabres in 2021, continues to focus on his development in Bakersfield. His early-season success, marked by his high assist total and team-oriented play, provides a promising foundation as he works toward his ultimate goal of an NHL opportunity with the Edmonton Oilers.
