Communities Unite in Grief After Fatal Highway Collision
The towns of Jasper and Hinton are enveloped in sorrow following a devastating crash that claimed the lives of two teenage hockey players. Danica Hills and Kayla Peacock, both members of the Jasper U18 Bearcats, were killed when the pickup truck they were traveling in collided with a semi-truck on Highway 16 near the Jasper Transfer Station on Monday night.
Memorials Honor Young Athletes
At the Jasper Activity Centre, a heartfelt memorial has been set up near the ice surface. Visitors are greeted by a table adorned with condolence books, photographs, and stuffed animals, positioned in front of the trophy cabinet. Behind this display, the red jerseys of Hills and Peacock hang as a poignant tribute to their dedication to the sport.
School Responds with Support
Both teens were students at Harry Collinge High School in Hinton. In response to the tragedy, classes have been cancelled for Wednesday, but the school remains open to provide access to grief counseling for students and staff. This measure aims to help the community cope with the sudden loss of their peers.
Remembering Kayla Peacock
Kayla Peacock joined the Bearcats in 2025, bringing her vibrant energy and passion for hockey. Jasper Minor Sports celebrated her addition on Facebook, noting her enthusiasm and unique skills from ringette. Beyond the rink, Peacock was deeply involved in rodeo culture, serving as a flag-bearer at the 2025 Central Alberta Rodeo Association finals and being selected as the Miss Rimbey Rodeo Queen last year.
Danica Hills: A Beloved Teammate
Danica Hills is remembered fondly by her family and friends. Her sister, Teagan Hills, shared a touching photo on social media with the caption, "My sweet, beautiful Danica," highlighting the personal impact of her loss. The community continues to share memories of her as a dedicated athlete and cherished individual.
Ongoing Community Support
As Jasper and Hinton navigate this difficult time, local organizations and residents are coming together to offer support. The memorial at the activity centre serves as a gathering point for those wishing to pay their respects, reflecting the deep bonds within these small Alberta communities.
