The Calgary Flames' blue line has a fresh face with something to prove, and his game plan for scoring that elusive first NHL point is refreshingly simple.
Yan Kuznetsov, the 22-year-old Russian defenceman, received the call-up from the AHL's Calgary Wranglers and is embracing a straightforward philosophy as he rejoins the NHL roster. "Just shoot the puck," Kuznetsov stated with a smile when asked about his strategy for registering his first point at hockey's highest level.
From Wranglers to Flames: A Seamless Transition
The young blueliner's promotion marks his second stint with the Flames this season, creating a unique advantage. Being able to drive to the Saddledome from the same city where he plays for the Wranglers eliminates the typical relocation stress that often accompanies call-ups.
"It's definitely easier than coming from a different city," Kuznetsov acknowledged. "You're already settled, you know the city, you know the guys. It makes the transition much smoother."
Proving His Worth in the AHL
Before his recall, Kuznetsov was demonstrating his value with the Wranglers, contributing eight assists through 44 games. While those numbers might not jump off the scoresheet, Flames head coach Ryan Huska emphasized that Kuznetsov's game extends beyond point production.
"He's a big body who moves well for his size," Huska noted, highlighting the defenceman's 6-foot-4, 216-pound frame. "He's been pretty solid defensively for the Wranglers. He's a guy that's hard to play against because of his reach and his size."
A Different Mindset for Second NHL Opportunity
Kuznetsov approaches this NHL opportunity with renewed perspective compared to his earlier call-up. "The first time, you're just so excited to be here," he reflected. "Now, you know what to expect a little more. You're still excited, but you're more focused on what you need to do to stay here."
The defenceman's previous NHL experience consisted of two games where he registered a minus-1 rating with no points and two penalty minutes. This time around, he's determined to make a more significant impact.
Building Confidence Through Simplicity
Kuznetsov's uncomplicated approach to earning his first point—"shoot the puck"—reflects a growing confidence in his abilities. Rather than overcomplicating his game, he plans to leverage his powerful shot and trust the process.
