The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed defenceman Emil Andrae to a two-year contract with a $1.55 million US cap hit, the team announced Saturday. The deal adds further depth to the Leafs' blue line after acquiring the 24-year-old from the Philadelphia Flyers last month as part of the trade involving goaltender Joseph Woll and defenceman Simon Benoit.
Andrae's Background and Performance
Andrae, a second-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, stands 5-foot-9 and is known for his puck-moving abilities. In 61 games with the Flyers last season, he recorded 13 points. Over his career, the Swedish native has appeared in 107 NHL games, tallying 20 points. His signing comes as the Leafs look to solidify their defensive corps ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Salary Cap Implications
With Andrae's contract, the Maple Leafs are now approximately $2.8 million over the NHL salary cap. General Manager John Chayka must address this before opening night. Veteran Morgan Rielly remains on the team despite ongoing trade speculation, with Chayka expressing confidence in his role. Additionally, the team is monitoring Chris Tanev's recovery from core muscle surgery as he approaches age 37.
Depth and Competition
The Leafs will also evaluate several prospects from the Toronto Marlies during training camp, including Ben Danford, William Villeneuve, and Noah Chadwick. Andrae's signing follows the sign-and-trade acquisition of Darren Raddysh, further enhancing the team's defensive depth. Where Andrae fits in the starting lineup remains uncertain, but his addition provides flexibility for the coaching staff.
