Canada's quest for gold at the 2026 IIHF Ice Hockey Men's World Championship ended on Saturday with a 4-2 loss to Finland in the semifinal at Swiss Life Arena in Zurich. The Canadians will now compete for bronze against Norway on Sunday.
Game Recap
Canada held a 2-1 lead after the first period, but Finland dominated the second period with three unanswered goals. Aleksander Barkov, Konsta Helenius, and Aatu Raty each scored to give Finland a commanding lead. Dylan Holloway and Robert Thomas had scored for Canada in the first period after Finland's Patrik Puistola opened the scoring just 3 1/2 minutes into the game.
Player Reactions
“Very disappointing,” Canada forward John Tavares told TSN after the game. “There’s a high expectation, a certain standard we have and a lot of pride playing for Canada. When you don’t meet that, it’s very difficult. We play for gold and that’s what we come to this tournament to try to earn and try to win. That dream comes to an end. We have to re-group and give our best (on Sunday in the bronze-medal game).”
Goaltending and Special Teams
Jet Greaves made 17 saves for Canada, while Finland's Justus Annunen stopped 27 shots, including all 14 in the third period. Canada failed to capitalize on two power-play opportunities, while Finland did not have any man advantages.
Upcoming Medal Games
Finland will face host Switzerland in the gold medal game on Sunday after Switzerland blanked Norway 6-0 in the other semifinal. Canada and Norway will play earlier on Sunday for bronze. This marks Canada's first loss in the tournament after eight consecutive wins.
