Edmonton Oilers General Manager Stan Bowman has delivered reassuring news regarding defenseman Evan Bouchard, who was the victim of a brutal hit during the IIHF World Championship quarterfinal between Canada and the United States. Speaking to Oilers Now host Bob Stauffer, Bowman confirmed that Bouchard is not seriously injured and is expected to make a full recovery.
Incident at the World Championship
The incident occurred on May 28, 2026, at BCF Arena in Fribourg, Switzerland, during the Canada vs. USA game. Bouchard was hit by American forward Ryan Lindgren in a play that left the Oilers defenseman unconscious before hitting the ice. Lindgren was assessed a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct. Canada went on to win the game 4-0.
Positive Update from Bowman
Bowman revealed that Team Canada General Manager Kyle Dubas immediately contacted him after the hit. “Kyle Dubas has been very proactive, given me an update as soon as the play happened. He had texted me and I’ve been texting with Evan as well,” Bowman said. “So we’re in touch with him. Obviously he’s injured, but he’s doing well. Thankfully, it’s not worse than it was, but clearly it was a terrible hit. It’s disappointing to see that happen.”
Bowman emphasized that the timing of the injury, occurring in late May, provides ample time for recovery before training camp. “But, thankfully, it’s May and a long time till training camp. So I think everyone in Edmonton knows how great Bouch is. I think maybe some other teams are seeing how effective he is. He’s playing great hockey for Canada over there. So it’s unfortunate that he’s not going to be playing the remainder there. But I think he’s going to be okay,” Bowman added.
Impact on Oilers
Bouchard has been a key player for the Oilers, and his absence from the remainder of the World Championship is a setback for Team Canada. However, the positive prognosis ensures that the Oilers' defensive core remains intact for the upcoming NHL season. The team and its fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Bouchard is on the mend.
