Kevin Bieksa Praises Rookie Zeev Buium's Potential and Winning Mindset
Bieksa Bullish on Canucks Rookie Zeev Buium's Future

Kevin Bieksa, the former Vancouver Canucks defenseman known for his candid and often humorous commentary, is making waves with his enthusiastic endorsement of rookie Zeev Buium. Bieksa, a respected voice on the Hockey Night in Canada panel, brings a wealth of experience from his 894 NHL games to his analysis, and he sees something special in the 20-year-old blueliner.

A Long-Standing Connection

Bieksa first met Buium seven years ago at a Detroit development camp organized by agent Kurt Overhardt, who now represents the young player. "I've known Zeev since he was 13 and have been helping him for a while," Bieksa revealed in a recent interview. "Very proud of his game and the type of person he is. He obviously has high-end skating and stick skills. But what fans are starting to see is his competitiveness to win."

This connection has given Bieksa unique insight into Buium's development, and he emphasizes that the rookie's attitude sets him apart. "It's the fight in his play down the stretch in meaningless games with leadership and his interviews to lead by example," Bieksa added. "He's a winner at every level. And you can tell he prioritizes and values that over points and stats. Most kids are the opposite, unfortunately."

On-Ice Performance and Growth

Buium's rookie season with the Canucks, though challenging for the team, showcased his potential. He finished third in league rookie defenseman scoring with 26 points (6 goals, 20 assists) in 76 games, and his game-tying goal against the Los Angeles Kings in April was a highlight-reel moment. Buium logged significant ice time, including 25 minutes in that game, and won the fan-voted most-exciting player award.

Despite the Canucks' struggles—finishing last in the league and allowing the most goals—Buium remained focused on improvement. "You're not going to sit here right now and be happy that everything was good and we won this game and that game," Buium stated during year-end media availability. "We have to focus on eliminating the mistakes and find ways to win. Toward the end, we tried to figure it out."

He reflected on his personal growth, saying, "I learned a lot about my game this season and started to find my confidence, learning what I can and can't do, and when to push the pace or sit back a little bit. I'm learning how to stay positive and not beat yourself up. I've found ways to keep pushing through and see light at end of the tunnel."

A History of Winning

Buium is no stranger to success, having accumulated an impressive list of accolades:

  • World Under-18 gold medal in 2023
  • NCAA championship with the University of Denver in 2024
  • World Junior Championship crown in 2024
  • World Championship gold in 2025

This winning pedigree, combined with his experience in Minnesota before the Quinn Hughes trade, has shaped his approach. "In Minnesota, even young guys had 300 or 400 games, but we're all in this together and learning every day from our mistakes," Buium noted. "That comes with time and experience."

Team Dynamics and Future Outlook

The Canucks' defensive corps, including Buium, Tom Willander (21), and Elias Pettersson (22), is young and talented but has faced challenges with consistency. Willander acknowledged the season's difficulties, saying, "This season has been interesting for many different reasons. But a great experience for me with a lot happening and doing a good job and pulling through and getting better. Ultimately, that's what is important."

Buium emphasized the need for simplicity and focus. "It's trusting each other and trusting the system," he explained. "Personally, sometimes when we get tired or frustrated, you miss your guy or a certain play because your head is somewhere else. It's staying focused and in the moment. Maybe, give it that extra five or 10 seconds or going a little bit harder. And if you get the puck, you're playing offence again."

Looking ahead, Buium expressed optimism: "Guys started to come together and be really excited for next year. We kind of have that foundation now, and hopefully, build something special." With one year left on his contract before becoming a restricted free agent, the Canucks have an opportunity to secure him as a cornerstone for the future.

Agent Kurt Overhardt, who manages 32 clients across 21 NHL teams, echoed Bieksa's praise. "A dynamic human being," Overhardt described Buium. "He's all about winning and really cares about developing team chemistry. And his skills speak for themselves." As the Canucks aim to rebuild, Buium's blend of skill, competitiveness, and winning mindset could be a key factor in turning the franchise around.
