Fred Couples Rules Out 2027 Ryder Cup Captaincy After Masters Disappointment

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Golf icon Fred Couples has firmly dismissed speculation that he is in consideration to captain the United States team at the 2027 Ryder Cup in Ireland. The 66-year-old made his stance clear following a difficult second round at the Masters Tournament, where he shot a three-over 75 to miss the cut at Augusta National Golf Club.

Couples Cites Age and Preference for Assistant Role

With Tiger Woods seemingly out of the running for the 2027 captaincy, many had speculated that Couples could be a leading candidate. However, the veteran golfer expressed that his days in such a high-pressure leadership position are behind him. "My days are long gone on that," Couples stated after his round on Friday, April 10, 2026.

Despite an impressive resume that includes five Ryder Cup appearances, three stints as an assistant captain, and three victorious U.S. Presidents Cup captaincies, Couples emphasized the demanding nature of the role. "I would be a good assistant and help, but (the captaincy) that's a hard job," he explained. "Not that I wouldn't want it, but I'm a little old to be worried about what kind of stuff they got to do."

Generational Bridge and Team Dynamics

Known for his effortless cool and ability to connect with younger players, Couples continues to maintain strong relationships with golfers less than half his age. This trait has made him a valuable asset in team environments, though he prefers a more laid-back approach. "I'm a little more loosey goosey. Sometimes I think that really helps," he said. "I don't like a lot of the other garbage, excuse me, I don't like a lot of other things you have to do. I think you need to worry about the players only and not other things."

Masters Meltdown and Water Hazards

Couples' week at the Masters was marked by both moments of brilliance and significant struggles. On Thursday, he found himself on the leaderboard at two-under par through 14 holes before a disastrous sequence unfolded. He carded a nine at the par-5 15th hole, followed by consecutive double bogeys, finishing with a six-over 78.

The veteran deposited three golf balls into the water during that stretch, including two with wedge shots after laying up at the 15th. The trend continued on Friday when he again found the water at the same hole. "I've played 41 years, and I don't need to go back. I've never wedged it into the water," Couples lamented. "In the old days I went for it every time, but not for 10 or 12 years, and then now it's water, water, water every time I look at the God damn thing, and I don't know why."

Enduring Love for Augusta National

Despite his frustrations, Couples' affection for Augusta National remains undiminished. When asked what makes the course so special, he responded with characteristic candor: "First of all, you would have to be an idiot not to love Augusta National. It's like paradise. People love it, but I consider it to be just the greatest walk you could ever have. There are great courses all over the world, but there are none of them like this."

As for who might lead the American Ryder Cup team in 2027, Couples suggested it could be Keegan Bradley, who previously captained the team, though he admitted uncertainty about the selection. The golf community will now watch as the search for a captain continues, with one legendary name officially off the table.
