The Saskatchewan Roughriders are using a three-week break between games to focus inward, intensifying camp battles as final roster cuts approach. With no games scheduled for nearly a month, the team is turning its attention to internal competition and player development.
Intensified Camp Battles
Head coach Corey Mace emphasized the importance of this period for evaluating players. 'We have a lot of guys competing for spots, and this break gives us a chance to really see who wants it,' Mace said. The team is holding extended practices and scrimmages to simulate game conditions.
Key Position Battles
Quarterback remains a focal point, with Trevor Harris and Mason Fine competing for the starting role. The offensive line is also under scrutiny after inconsistent performances in early preseason games. Defensively, the secondary is seeing fierce competition for starting cornerback positions.
General Manager Jeremy O'Day noted that roster decisions will be difficult. 'We have depth at several positions, which is a good problem to have,' O'Day said. The team must trim its roster to 46 players by the June 15 deadline.
Player Development Focus
Beyond roster cuts, the coaching staff is using the break to install new schemes and improve fundamentals. 'This is a chance to correct mistakes and build chemistry,' offensive coordinator Kelly Jeffrey said. The team is also focusing on conditioning to prevent injuries during the long season.
Veteran linebacker Larry Dean stressed the mental aspect. 'It's about staying sharp and focused even without games. We're treating every practice like a game,' Dean said.
The Roughriders will return to action on June 22 against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Until then, the battle for roster spots continues in Regina.
