Texas state Representative James Talarico, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in Texas, quickly set a confrontational tone for the general election campaign after Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton secured the Republican nomination in a runoff election on Tuesday night.
Talarico's Immediate Response
Just minutes after Paxton's victory was announced, Talarico posted on X: "Ken Paxton is the most corrupt politician in America. He embodies the broken system we're running against. It's time to come together: The People vs. Ken Paxton." In an accompanying video, Talarico elaborated: "Three years ago, Ken Paxton was impeached by his own party for using his public office to enrich himself, and his donors, at the expense of the people. That kind of corruption is the rot at the core of this broken system."
Paxton's Victory Speech
During his victory speech, Paxton attacked Talarico, labeling him an "extreme radical" and a "Texas-faced puppet for Chuck Schumer and the national Democrats." Paxton expressed gratitude for President Donald Trump's endorsement, despite opposition from many Senate Republicans who had urged Trump to back incumbent Senator John Cornyn. "When everyone in Washington told him to abandon me and abandon the people of Texas, he didn't listen," Paxton said. "Instead, he gave his complete and total endorsement. President Trump is the leader of our party, and his endorsement is the most powerful force in politics."
Trump Celebrates Paxton's Win
President Donald Trump celebrated the victory on his social media platform, posting a graphic of himself and Paxton with the caption "Ken Paxton wins! Endorsed by President Trump!"
Republican Reactions and Concerns
Following his loss, Cornyn stated he would support Paxton in the general election. However, numerous Republican senators had expressed strong reservations about Trump's endorsement of Paxton. The New York Times reported that many were "livid" at the president's decision. Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska described herself as "supremely disappointed," warning that backing the scandal-ridden Paxton could jeopardize a traditionally safe Republican seat. Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota had urged Trump to support Cornyn, viewing him as a stronger candidate. Thune acknowledged Trump's endorsement was "his decision."
Paxton's Scandal-Plagued Record
Paxton's tenure as Texas attorney general has been marred by scandal. In 2023, he was impeached by the Republican-led Texas House on charges of bribery, dereliction of duty, obstruction of justice, and abuse of public trust, stemming from allegations that he used his office to assist real estate developer Nate Paul. Although the House voted 121-23 to impeach, Paxton was later acquitted by the Texas State Senate.
