Flames to Pick Best Player Available at No. 6 in NHL Draft
Flames to Pick Best Player Available at No. 6 in NHL Draft

The Calgary Flames have a clear strategy for the upcoming NHL Draft: they will select the best player available when they make the sixth overall pick on June 26. General Manager Craig Conroy emphasized that the team's decision will not be influenced by positional needs, whether it be forward, defenseman, or goaltender.

Best Player Available Philosophy

Conroy stated plainly, "We're going to go best player at six. If that's forward, defence, goalie, whatever, we're going to pick the best one." This approach has served the Flames well in recent years, and with the current state of their development pipeline, adding depth at any position except goaltender is seen as beneficial.

Draft Uncertainty

The challenge for the Flames is the unpredictability of the draft order. While there is a general consensus on the top seven or eight prospects, the exact sequence remains unclear. The Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to select Gavin McKenna first overall, but after that, the order is anyone's guess.

For much of the season, it was assumed that Ivar Stenberg and Keaton Verhoeff would go second and third in some order. However, recent developments have introduced uncertainty. The San Jose Sharks, holding the No. 2 spot, may be open to trading down given their depth of young talent and playoff aspirations. Meanwhile, the Vancouver Canucks at No. 3 might favor Caleb Malhotra due to his familial ties with the organization.

Potential Scenarios for the Flames

This uncertainty makes it difficult to predict which player will be available for Calgary. If a right-shot defenseman like Chase Reid or Verhoeff drops to sixth, the Flames might already have depth in that area with prospects Zayne Parekh and Hunter Brzustewicz rising through the ranks. However, Conroy insists that if such a player is the best available, the team will not hesitate to select him.

"It just gives you more depth," Conroy explained. "You can never have enough defencemen, elite ones that are top six picks in the NHL are exciting. It gives you a whole bunch of opportunity and different things to look at."

Addressing Scoring Woes

The Flames' scoring struggles this season have been a topic of discussion. Matt Coronato led the team with 45 points, and there are no young prospects ready to immediately boost the offense next season. Prospects like Cole Reschny and Cullen Potter are still at least a year away. However, Conroy noted that the draft is about building for the future, and the sixth overall pick is unlikely to be an immediate offensive savior.

"We'll really dig in," Conroy said, remaining upbeat despite the team falling to sixth overall in the draft lottery. He expects players like Coronato, Morgan Frost, and Matvei Gridin to increase their production next season, providing some internal improvement.
