The Vancouver Canucks are exploring trade options to secure the second overall pick in the upcoming NHL draft. With two of the best draft picks in franchise history now running the team, acquiring the second and third picks would be a fitting move. Here are three trade scenarios that could work.
Scenario One: The Pick Swap
One option involves a pick swap for 2027. A source suggested, "Make it a 2027 pick swap, at their choice. Vancouver has a real chance to pick in top-3 in 2027." This would give San Jose a chance to have a top-three pick next year while building their current roster. The Canucks would likely need to add more to the deal, but it's worth a call.
Scenario Two: The Defenceman Trade
The most realistic option is a hockey trade involving defenceman Filip Hronek. San Jose needs players who can contribute now. "Offer Hronek for second overall and work from there," a source said. Adding the Canucks' No. 24 pick might seal the deal. Another suggestion includes Hronek and goalie Thatcher Demko, betting on Demko's recovery from hip surgery.
Scenario Three: Pick Valuation
The third option is creative. Using Puckpedia's pick value charts, the second overall pick is worth 72 points. A mid-first round pick (like No. 24) is worth 25 points, and second-round picks are worth six points. To bridge the gap, the Canucks could offer Hronek plus the 10th overall pick, which is worth 35 points. Alternatively, Hronek plus the 24th overall pick might still tempt San Jose.
These scenarios highlight the Canucks' creative thinking as they aim to bolster their roster through the draft.
