Blue Jays shut out by Red Sox on hockey night

It was hockey night at the Rogers Centre on Monday night, thanks to a giveaway celebrating popular Blue Jays infielder Ernie Clement. However, the Toronto Blue Jays were unable to match the festive atmosphere, falling 5-0 to the Boston Red Sox in the opener of a three-game series.

Game Summary

The Blue Jays faced tough pitching from Red Sox starter Ranger Suarez, who allowed just one hit over eight innings while striking out 10. Toronto's offense struggled to generate any momentum, managing only a leadoff double from Jesus Sanchez in the sixth inning that went nowhere.

Jays pitcher Dylan Cease started strong, striking out five batters in the first three innings, but unraveled in the middle innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits over 5.2 innings, throwing 107 pitches. Cease made a throwing error and fell off the mound, leading to an infield single and a high pitch count.

The sellout crowd of 41,785, many hoping to snag a Clement Blue Jays hockey jersey, witnessed little excitement beyond a spectacular catch by Davis Schneider in left field that robbed the Red Sox of an extra-base hit.

Ernie Clement Love-In

Prior to the game, the atmosphere was electric as fans lined up from the morning to secure the giveaway Clement jerseys. Teammates joined the fun, with George Springer wearing a hockey helmet and Hartford Whalers-colored gloves, and Louis Varland sporting a full visor. Clement also caught the ceremonial first pitch from Toronto Sceptres forward Daryl Watts.

Manager John Schneider explained the fans' affection for Clement: “Performance and personality. I think when you get 30 hits in the post-season, that’s something. And you go play for Team USA, that’s something. And then when you don’t change who you are, I think people appreciate that.”

Schneider noted that three years ago, it would have been hard to imagine Clement being the focus of a giveaway night. He added, “I think the way he plays is very relatable to a lot of people. He plays hard.”

Where It Went Wrong

Cease had been off to a great start this season, allowing just three earned runs combined in his previous three starts. However, Boston hitters began working deep into counts, a weakness for Cease this year. He failed to record a strikeout after the third inning, and the 4-0 deficit proved insurmountable against Suarez's dominance.

The Blue Jays fell to 12-16 with the loss, while the Red Sox improved to 12-17, winning their third straight game.
