The Los Angeles Chargers have selected Canadian defensive end Akheem Mesidor in the first round of the 2026 NFL draft. Mesidor, who played college football at the University of Miami, was chosen as the 25th overall pick.
Mesidor, a native of Ontario, Canada, emerged as a standout pass rusher for the Hurricanes. During his senior season, he recorded 10 sacks and 15 tackles for loss, earning All-ACC honors. His combination of speed and power made him a top prospect.
Canadian pipeline continues
Mesidor becomes the latest Canadian to be drafted in the first round, following in the footsteps of other NFL players from north of the border. His selection highlights the growing presence of Canadian talent in the league.
Reaction from Mesidor
In a statement, Mesidor expressed excitement about joining the Chargers. 'It's a dream come true to be drafted by such a storied franchise. I can't wait to get to work and help the team win,' he said.
The Chargers, who finished the previous season with a 9-8 record, were looking to bolster their defensive line. Mesidor is expected to contribute immediately as a rotational pass rusher.
NFL analysts praised the pick, noting Mesidor's upside and work ethic. 'He has the tools to become a disruptive force in the league,' said one draft expert.
The draft continues with rounds two and three scheduled for Friday.
