Michaela Kleisinger has been appointed as the full-time head coach of the University of Regina Cougars women's basketball team following a university review that acknowledged her interim performance and community connections were not adequately considered.
Background and Initial Hiring Process
Kleisinger, a former player and assistant coach for the Cougars, served as interim head coach during the 2025-26 season after longtime coach Dave Taylor stepped down. Under her leadership, the team achieved an impressive 17-3 record in Canada West play and climbed to No. 4 in the U Sports national rankings. Despite this success, the university initially appeared to pass over Kleisinger for the permanent position.
Social Media Backlash and University Response
Although the university never officially confirmed the hiring of another candidate, reports emerged that a male, out-of-province candidate with limited U Sports experience and no local ties was being considered. This sparked significant backlash on social media from alumni and the basketball community in southern Saskatchewan. In response, University President Jeff Keshen announced a review of the hiring policies for coaching positions.
Review Findings and Decision
The standard hiring process involves a selection committee assessing applicants and nominating a top candidate. Lisa Robertson, the university's director of sport, community engagement, and athlete development, would then present the recommendation to Dean Harold Reimer for approval. Robertson was not made available for interviews, and the university declined to comment on whether another candidate had been offered the job or on potential legal or financial implications.
In an official statement, Keshen said: “The University of Regina has determined that certain important factors including the interim coach’s demonstrated performance and the strong competitive record under her leadership, as well as her deep connection to the institution and the broader community were not given the necessary weight and merit. In light of these considerations, an offer has been made and accepted by Michaela Kleisinger to lead the Cougars women’s basketball team as head coach. This decision reflects the University’s commitment to excellence in sport, inclusive leadership, and the future of Cougars women’s basketball.”
Kleisinger, when contacted via text, was in a meeting and indicated she would try to call back later. The university's decision marks a reversal that underscores the importance of community ties and performance in the hiring process.
