Tourigny Ejected for Stomping on Opponent's Skate at Memorial Cup

Chicoutimi Sagueneens defenceman Jordan Tourigny has become the center of controversy after a disturbing incident during Tuesday night's Memorial Cup game against the Kitchener Rangers. The overage player was caught on camera stomping on the skate of Rangers winger Christian Humphreys, leading to his ejection and widespread condemnation.

The Incident

During the third period, as players battled for the puck along the boards, Tourigny was seen stomping three times on Humphreys' skate. Humphreys fell to the ice in apparent pain and was unable to return to the game, though he did manage to leave the ice under his own power. The officials initially assessed a five-minute major penalty, which was upgraded to a match penalty for kicking after a review.

Coaches' Reactions

Rangers coach Jussi Ahokas did not mince words when discussing the play. "Well, that's a cowardice play stomping with the skate. That's not tough hockey, that's coward hockey, that's not in our values," Ahokas told reporters. "If someone does that, that's cheap, cheapest thing that you can do in hockey for me." He emphasized that he appreciates tough, physical hockey but that this incident had nothing to do with playing well. Ahokas also stated that he had no immediate update on Humphreys' condition.

Tourigny's teammate Sam O'Reilly also expressed disapproval. "It's obviously terrible. You never want to see a guy go down like that," O'Reilly said. "Obviously, it's not a hockey play and it's not how we play the game."

Online Backlash

The clip quickly went viral on social media, drawing harsh criticism from fans and analysts. Many called for severe punishment, including a lifetime ban. One user wrote, "He should get a lifetime ban from playing again, that is disgusting." Another commented, "Cheap and dirty. No place for it in the game." A third user stated, "That better be the last play of Tourigny's CHL career."

League Response

The QMJHL issued a statement addressing both the incident and the subsequent online harassment. "Jordan Tourigny made a regrettable play in the third period, one he deeply regrets," the league posted on X. "However, the hate, threats, and violent messages being directed at him on social media have absolutely no place in our game or in our community." The league reminded fans that players are young athletes between the ages of 16 and 20 and deserve respect and support, even in difficult moments. One follower noted that Tourigny is actually 21 years old, slightly above that age range.

The NHL's Department of Player Safety, which handles post-game reviews during the Memorial Cup, will determine if additional discipline is warranted.

Who is Jordan Tourigny?

Tourigny spent his first four full junior seasons with the Shawinigan Cataractes before being traded to the Sagueneens mid-season. He helped Chicoutimi win the QMJHL title with eight goals and 24 assists in 29 regular-season games, adding 16 points in the playoffs. This is his second Memorial Cup appearance, having first reached the CHL championship in 2022 as a rookie. He has made a verbal commitment to play NCAA hockey at Northeastern University next season.
