Toronto Raptors forward Scottie Barnes has been named to the NBA's All-Defensive Second Team, the league announced on Friday. The honor recognizes Barnes as one of the top defenders in the league during the 2025-26 season.
Barnes, 24, averaged 1.8 steals and 1.2 blocks per game while often guarding the opponent's best player. His versatility allowed him to defend multiple positions, from point guards to centers. He also recorded a defensive rating of 108.3, among the best on the Raptors.
The selection is the first All-Defensive Team honor for Barnes, who was the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2022. He joins elite company on the second team, which includes players known for their defensive impact.
Raptors' Defensive Anchor
Barnes' defensive contributions were crucial for a Raptors team that finished seventh in defensive rating this season. His length and athleticism made him a disruptive force in passing lanes and as a shot blocker. Head coach Darko Rajakovic praised Barnes' growth on that end of the floor.
"Scottie has taken pride in his defense since day one," Rajakovic said. "He studies opponents, communicates well, and puts in the work. This recognition is well-deserved."
Barnes also averaged 20.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game, showcasing his all-around game. However, it is his defense that earned him this latest accolade.
League-Wide Recognition
The All-Defensive teams were voted on by a panel of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters. Barnes received 48 second-team votes and 12 first-team votes, totaling 60 points. He finished ahead of other notable defenders like Jrue Holiday and Jaren Jackson Jr.
This honor adds to Barnes' growing list of achievements and solidifies his status as a cornerstone player for the Raptors. The team is expected to build around him and fellow young star RJ Barrett in the coming seasons.
Barnes expressed gratitude for the recognition but emphasized team goals. "It's nice to get individual awards, but I want to win championships," he said. "I'll keep working to help this team succeed."
