The New York Knicks have punched their ticket to the NBA Finals for the first time in 27 years, completing a dominant four-game sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers with a 130-93 victory on Monday night. Karl-Anthony Towns led the way with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while OG Anunoby added 17 points as the Knicks secured the Eastern Conference championship.
Historic Playoff Run
The Knicks became the fourth team in NBA history to string together an 11-game winning streak during the postseason, matching the 2017 Golden State Warriors, who won 15 straight en route to a title. New York has won all but one of its playoff games by double digits, boasting an average margin of victory of 23.7 points.
"I feel like the word 'hope' has been gone from the New York Knicks name for a long time," Towns said. "For me to be part of this team that revives hope is something special."
Dominant Performance
The Knicks pulled their starters with 7:47 remaining in the fourth quarter, leading by 35 points. A large contingent of New York fans, including celebrities Spike Lee, Tracy Morgan, Timothée Chalamet, and Kylie Jenner, loudly chanted "Knicks in four!"
New York dominated in second-chance points, outscoring Cleveland 32-5, and held a 33-9 advantage in fast-break points. Landry Shamet scored 16 points off the bench, while Mikal Bridges and Jalen Brunson each contributed 15. Brunson was named Eastern Conference Finals MVP, averaging 25.5 points and 7.8 assists in the series.
Cavaliers Struggle
Donovan Mitchell scored 31 points for Cleveland, which was swept in a postseason series for the first time since the 2018 NBA Finals. "They're playing better basketball. You've got to give them credit," Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson said. "They're on a heater."
James Harden, who finished with 12 points on 2-of-8 shooting, lamented missed opportunities. "Yes, it was 4-0, but we didn't give ourselves a chance," he said. "Genuinely, I think we are the better team, but series-wise we didn't show it."
Looking Ahead
The Knicks will face either the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder or the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals, which begin June 3. The Western Conference finals are tied 2-2, with Game 5 set for Tuesday in Oklahoma City. The Thunder or Spurs will have home-court advantage due to a better regular-season record.
This marks the Knicks' third Finals appearance since winning their last title in 1973. They lost in seven games to Houston in 1994 and in five to San Antonio in 1999. Knicks legends Walt Frazier and Patrick Ewing presented the Bob Cousy Trophy to the team on the court.
Coach Mike Brown reached the Finals in his first year with the Knicks, the 15th time since the NBA-ABA merger that a first-year coach has done so. Brown previously led the Cavaliers to the Finals in 2007.
