Jets Add Skinner, Ferraro in NHL Free Agency

The Winnipeg Jets made two key additions during NHL free agency on July 1, 2026, signing goaltender Stuart Skinner and defenseman Mario Ferraro to multi-year contracts. The moves aim to strengthen the team's depth as they prepare for the 2026-27 season.

Skinner Bolsters Goaltending Corps

Stuart Skinner, 27, agreed to a three-year deal worth $3.5 million annually, according to team sources. The Edmonton native spent the past four seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins, posting a .912 save percentage and 2.78 goals-against average over 45 games in 2025-26. His arrival provides experienced backup support behind starter Connor Hellebuyck. "Stuart brings size and athleticism to our crease," said Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff in a statement. "He has proven he can handle heavy workloads, and we believe he will be a reliable presence for us."

Ferraro Adds Defensive Depth

Mario Ferraro, 27, signed a two-year contract worth $2.2 million per season. The Toronto native spent his entire career with the San Jose Sharks, recording 12 points and a plus-7 rating in 68 games last season. Ferraro is known for his shot-blocking ability and defensive positioning. "Mario is a hard-nosed defenseman who competes every shift," Cheveldayoff added. "His style fits our system perfectly." The Jets ranked 14th in goals against last season, and Ferraro is expected to help improve that statistic.

Impact on Jets' Roster

The signings address two areas of need for Winnipeg. Skinner replaces Laurent Brossoit, who signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs earlier in free agency. Ferraro adds left-shot depth behind Josh Morrissey and Dylan Samberg. The Jets currently have approximately $8.6 million in salary cap space remaining, according to CapFriendly. Both players are expected to compete for roster spots during training camp in September. The Jets finished third in the Central Division last season with a 45-27-10 record before losing in the first round of the playoffs.
