New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer has been named the unanimous winner of the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie for the 2025-26 season. The announcement was made by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association on Wednesday.
Historic Achievement
Schaefer, 20, becomes the first defenseman to win the award unanimously since the NHL began tracking voting in 1968. He received all 100 first-place votes, joining elite company such as Patrick Kane (2008) and Connor McDavid (2016) as unanimous Calder winners.
Dominant Season
Schaefer led all NHL rookies in scoring with 72 points (18 goals, 54 assists) in 78 games, while averaging over 22 minutes of ice time per game. His plus-minus rating of plus-29 was also best among first-year players.
"It's an incredible honor to be recognized by the writers," Schaefer said in a statement. "I couldn't have done it without my teammates and coaches. This is just the beginning."
Impact on Islanders
Schaefer's stellar play helped the Islanders secure a playoff berth for the first time since 2023. He formed a formidable defensive pairing with veteran Ryan Pulock, anchoring the team's blue line.
Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello praised Schaefer's maturity and work ethic. "Matthew is a special player and an even better person. He has a bright future ahead of him."
The Calder Trophy will be awarded at the NHL Awards ceremony on June 24 in Las Vegas.
