Giannis Antetokounmpo Addresses Trade Rumors, Focuses on Health Amid Bucks' Struggles
Giannis Antetokounmpo Dismisses Trade Rumors, Focuses on Health

Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo has publicly addressed the persistent trade rumors surrounding his future for the first time, stating his primary focus remains on recovering from injury and helping his team reverse its fortunes.

Trade Speculation Takes a Backseat to Recovery

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, December 18, 2025, Antetokounmpo downplayed the significance of a recent ESPN report that indicated discussions between his agent, Alex Saratsis, and Bucks officials about his long-term fit with the franchise. The nine-time All-NBA forward stressed that his immediate priority is returning from a right calf strain suffered on December 3 against the Detroit Pistons.

"There's going to be conversations that are going to be made between (my agent) and the Bucks, and him and his other players, and him and other teams and other GMs, executives around the league," Antetokounmpo said during a 24-minute media session. "It's something that you can't control. But, at the end of the day, I personally have not had the conversation with the Bucks. I'm still locked in, locked in on my teammates. Most importantly, locked in on me getting back healthy."

Injury Woes and Team Struggles Fuel Rumors

The speculation about a potential Antetokounmpo trade has intensified as the Bucks have faltered on the court. Entering their Thursday night matchup against the Toronto Raptors, Milwaukee held a disappointing 11-16 record. The team's performance has notably suffered without its two-time MVP, posting a 2-8 mark in games he has missed.

Antetokounmpo, who turned 31 on December 6, has been plagued by separate injuries this season. After missing four games with a left adductor strain in November, he returned only to strain his calf in his fourth game back. He suggested his quick return from the first injury may have contributed to the second. "Maybe it was a mistake of me coming back a little bit earlier," he admitted, explaining that overcompensation can lead to a soleus muscle injury.

Navigating the Noise with Teammates and Family

The constant media chatter has become a distraction, one that Antetokounmpo acknowledged is difficult for his family and teammates. He described the surreal experience of seeing his name linked to various teams in trade scenarios. "This is the most I've been ever talked about in my career," he said. "I'm in my house with my kids and all that and I'm opening the TV and it's like, 'Oh, Giannis is going to the Memphis Grizzlies,' or 'Giannis is going to the Detroit Pistons.'"

To manage the situation internally, Antetokounmpo has held informal conversations with teammates to offer reassurance and maintain focus. He dismissed the idea of a formal team meeting about his future, emphasizing a shared urgency to improve. "I'm never going to have a meeting with my teammates and sit everybody down and talk about like, 'Hey guys, hey, if we don't win I'm going to get out of here,'" he stated. "Like, come on. We're grown … men."

While he hoped in October to avoid the topic for the rest of the season, Antetokounmpo now accepts that the rumors will persist as long as the team struggles. "When people see cracks, they see opportunity to get in through those cracks," he noted.

Ultimately, his message was one of singular focus on basketball. "At the end of the day we're fighting for our lives," Antetokounmpo concluded. "Like, we've got to win a game. So, rumors won't help us win a game. Or, you know, anything else. We've just got to focus on basketball." The Bucks' performance for the remainder of this critical season will likely determine whether the speculation fades or becomes a reality.
