Blue Jays' Jesus Sanchez Injured After Fan Throws Ball in Bizarre Incident
Blue Jays' Sanchez Injured by Fan-Thrown Ball

The Toronto Blue Jays have faced a season riddled with injuries, but the latest setback is undoubtedly the most unusual. Outfielder Jesus Sanchez exited Sunday's series finale against the Baltimore Orioles under peculiar circumstances.

During the sixth inning, Sanchez appeared to be struck by a ball thrown from a fan in the stands. The Blue Jays broadcast crew initially lacked video footage, leaving viewers puzzled. Play-by-play announcer Dan Shulman noted that the Orioles' broadcast also had no footage of the incident.

However, grainy video later emerged, seemingly confirming that a fan threw a ball toward Sanchez, who was not expecting it. The Blue Jays television crew reported that a fan was removed from the stands. Sanchez's glove and a baseball were visible in the outfield, though it was not the game ball.

Sanchez showed significant discomfort as manager John Schneider and a trainer attended to him in the outfield. He soon left the game. Sportsnet reporter Arden Zwelling suggested the injury might be accidental, involving a young fan and Sanchez in a harmless game of catch gone wrong. The incident occurred during a mound visit, and it appears a young fan unintentionally threw the ball at Sanchez, hitting him in the right wrist.

This bizarre event comes after the Jays suffered a crushing 5-1 lead collapse in the ninth inning on Saturday. The team's injury list is extensive, including starting pitchers Dylan Cease, Max Scherzer, Shane Bieber, Jose Berrios, and Cody Ponce, as well as relievers Joe Mantiply, Tommy Nance, Yimi Garcia, and Bowden Francis. Position players Addison Barger, Alejandro Kirk, Leyln Sosa, and Anthony Santandar are also injured.

The Blue Jays have a day off Monday before facing the Atlanta Braves in a three-game series starting Tuesday. They return home for a nine-game homestand Friday against the Orioles, followed by series against the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees.
