The Toronto Blue Jays dropped a 5-4 decision to the New York Yankees on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium, a game that initially promised a pitchers' duel but instead delivered frustration for the visitors.
Dylan Cease, the Blue Jays' strikeout leader, started strong, holding the Yankees scoreless through three innings while striking out six of the first nine batters. However, he relied heavily on his fastball and slider, often shaking off catcher Tyler Heineman's calls for secondary pitches. That limited arsenal caught up with him in the fourth inning, when the Yankees scored three runs after the Jays had taken a 3-0 lead. Cease then surrendered a two-run homer to Ben Rice in the fifth, which proved to be the difference.
Cease issued four walks on the night, three of which came around to score. Yankees starter Will Warren, meanwhile, worked five innings and allowed three runs on four singles, a walk, and a sacrifice bunt in the fourth. He earned his sixth win against one loss.
The Blue Jays had multiple opportunities to tie or take the lead. Three times, including the ninth inning, they had runners on first and third with one out. The first two instances produced no runs. In the ninth, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center, but with the tying run on third and the go-ahead run on second, closer Camilo Doval induced a groundout from Kazuma Okamoto to end the game.
With the loss, the Blue Jays fell to six games under .500. The series continues Wednesday night, with Trey Yesavage starting for Toronto against Yankees right-hander Cam Schlittler, who owns a 6-1 record.
Macko Shines in Relief
Left-hander Adam Macko, making his major-league debut in New York, appeared in both games of the series so far. On Monday, he earned a hold with a scoreless inning. On Tuesday, he followed Cease in the sixth and recorded his first career strikeout against Jazz Chisholm Jr. before being pulled after allowing a single.
Injury Update
The Blue Jays placed left-handed reliever Joe Mantiply on the 15-day injured list with left knee inflammation. Right-hander Chase Lee was recalled in a corresponding move. Mantiply is the 13th Blue Jay to land on the injured list this season. Infielder Ernie Clement missed the game due to strep throat, with Davis Schneider starting at second base in his place.
