Max Scherzer reached a significant career milestone during Wednesday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies, but the veteran pitcher was left disappointed as his Toronto Blue Jays fell short, losing 4-3 at Rogers Centre.
Scherzer's Milestone Moment
Scherzer recorded his 3,500th career strikeout in the third inning, becoming just the 11th pitcher in MLB history to achieve the feat. The right-hander finished the night with seven strikeouts over six innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits. Despite the personal achievement, Scherzer emphasized that the loss overshadowed the milestone.
"It's a great honor, but it doesn't mean much when you don't win the game," Scherzer said after the game. "We need to find a way to get the job done as a team."
Game Recap
The Blue Jays took an early lead in the first inning on a two-run homer by Vladimir Guerrero Jr., but the Phillies responded with three runs in the third, capped by a two-run double from Bryce Harper. Toronto tied the game in the fifth on a solo shot by Bo Bichette, but Philadelphia regained the lead in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Nick Castellanos.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider praised Scherzer's performance despite the loss. "Max gave us a chance to win, and that's all you can ask for. He competed out there and made some big pitches when he needed to."
Looking Ahead
The Blue Jays (38-28) will look to bounce back in the series finale Thursday afternoon. Right-hander Kevin Gausman is scheduled to start for Toronto against Phillies lefty Ranger Suárez.
Scherzer, who signed a one-year deal with Toronto in the offseason, remains focused on the bigger picture. "We have a good team here, and we're going to keep grinding. It's a long season, and we'll get back on track."
