Saskatoon Berries Start 3-1; Mamba Get First Wins

The Saskatoon Berries have kicked off their 2026 Western Canadian Baseball League season with an impressive 3-1 record, following a home-and-home series against the Weyburn Beavers. Meanwhile, the Saskatoon Mamba secured their first victories of the Canadian Elite Basketball League campaign after a challenging start.

Berries Dominate in Season Opener

Starting on the road, the Berries overpowered the Beavers with a commanding 13-3 win on Thursday night, followed by a shutout 18-0 victory on Friday. The series moved to Saskatoon for Saturday and Sunday games. The Berries edged out a 7-6 win on Saturday, but their season-opening winning streak ended at three games with a narrow 9-8 loss on Sunday.

The team now faces a quick turnaround, traveling to Regina on Tuesday to take on the Red Sox. They will return home Thursday to host the Moose Jaw Miller Express.

Mamba Rally for Back-to-Back Wins

The Saskatoon Mamba started their 2026 CEBL season with four consecutive losses but have since turned things around with two comeback victories, both in front of home crowds. On Friday night, the Mamba defeated the Winnipeg Sea Bears 100-98 after trailing by six points at halftime. Captain Tavian Dunn-Martin led the team with 21 points, including crucial free throws to reach the target score. Teddy Allen of Winnipeg scored a game-high 28 points.

Two days later, the Mamba faced the Scarborough Shooting Stars in a rematch from May 21. This time, Saskatoon won 90-88. The team trailed for most of the game but pulled ahead early in the fourth quarter. The lead changed hands multiple times, with neither team leading by more than three points. Tied at 88-88, Tevian Jones sank two free throws to secure the victory. Dunn-Martin was the game's high scorer with 23 points.

With a 2-4 record, the Mamba now sit fourth in the CEBL Western Conference standings, ahead of the Calgary Surge. Their next game is on June 6 against the conference-leading Vancouver Bandits, who hold a 5-1 record.

Huskies 3x3 Team Wins Silver

Four members of the University of Saskatchewan women's basketball team earned silver at the FISU 3x3 Americas Championship last week. The team, composed of Tea DeMong, Maya Flindall, Ella Murphy Weibe, and Logan Reider, fell 21-15 to Carleton University in the final. Reider was named to the tournament all-star team, and Laura Dally served as coach. The silver medal secured Saskatchewan a spot at the 2026 University World Cup, as Carleton had already qualified as defending champions.
