Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman may have summed up the feelings of many baseball fans enduring a long, cold, and wet winter with a playful threat on social media. "If the roof is closed tonight we riot," Gausman posted on X Monday afternoon, sparking a response from the team that confirmed the long-awaited opening of the Rogers Centre roof.
Roof Open for First Time This Season
As it turns out, Gausman and his teammates got their wish. The Rogers Centre roof was opened for the first time in the 2026 season on Monday night, as the Blue Jays faced the Miami Marlins in the first of a three-game series. The decision came after sunny skies and an afternoon high of 18°C were forecast, with temperatures expected to drop to 12°C after sunset under clear skies.
Anticipation Builds for Open-Air Baseball
The opening of the roof was one of the most anticipated moments of the early season, arriving 10 days later than the previous year. In 2025, the roof first opened on May 15, while in 2024, an unseasonably warm spring led to an April 12 debut—the earliest in the stadium's history since it opened in 1989. This year's opening is the latest since 2019, when the roof first opened on June 6, excluding the COVID-delayed 2021 season.
Fans lined up outside the dome early Monday afternoon, eager to snag a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. bobblehead giveaway. The crowd was expected to be massive, with many excited to enjoy open-air baseball after a long winter.
More Open Air on the Horizon
With similar temperatures forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday, including a 1:07 p.m. matinee start on Wednesday, fans may enjoy the roof open for the remainder of the home stand. Tuesday is expected to be even warmer, while Wednesday's high is forecast at 19°C under mainly sunny skies. Following Wednesday's game, the Blue Jays will embark on a seven-game road trip through Baltimore and Atlanta.
The roof opening marks a welcome change for players and fans alike, offering a taste of summer after a challenging spring. Gausman's lighthearted post captured the sentiment perfectly, and the team's quick response ensured a memorable night at the ballpark.
