New Maple Leafs Coach Jim Hiller: More Than Just Defense
New Maple Leafs Coach Jim Hiller: More Than Just Defense

Jim Hiller, the new head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, is pushing back against the label of a purely defensive strategist. Despite his tenure with the Los Angeles Kings, where the team excelled at limiting 5-on-5 goals, Hiller's background as an offensive player and his creative approach to the game are expected to reshape the Leafs' play. Dan Price, assistant coach for the Chicago Wolves and a former colleague of Hiller, noted, "L.A. had been so very sound structurally, that people seemed to view him as more defensive. But where his real creativity shines through is on the offensive side of the puck."

Hiller's Offensive Roots

As a player, Hiller amassed 624 points over 12 years across college, the NHL, minors, and Europe. He was known as an offensive player and a power-play specialist. Price described him as "a Luc Robitaille type" who sees the game through unique angles. Hiller's playing career included being the leading scorer for Northern Michigan after their national championship win in 1991. That experience inspired his coaching aspirations: "I was like 'that's a pretty cool, maybe I could lead some players, try to inspire them, get them to accomplish something great,'" Hiller recalled in a previous interview with Kings Insider.

Balancing Defense and Offense in Toronto

The Leafs struggled defensively last season, leading to the dismissal of former coach Craig Berube. Hiller's defensive reputation is seen as an asset, but his offensive creativity is equally vital. John Gruden, head coach of the Toronto Marlies and a former colleague of Hiller, emphasized the balance: "The harder you defend, the quicker you get the puck back so you can go play in the fun zone. On any good team, the offence wins you a lot of games in regular season, but defence wins you championships." The Marlies, under Gruden, scored in bunches during their Calder Cup run but also won low-scoring games, demonstrating the synergy Hiller aims to replicate with the Leafs.

Relationship with Leafs Stars

Hiller previously worked with Auston Matthews and William Nylander as an assistant coach under Mike Babcock from 2016 to 2020. Price noted, "I can say anecdotally, I've heard those relationships in Toronto he had as assistant were really solid because of the way Jim sees the game." Last season, Berube's efforts to improve the two-way play of high-scoring players like Matthews and Nylander faced resistance. Hiller's established rapport may facilitate a smoother transition.

Coaching Influences and Philosophy

Hiller's coaching career began in the WHL with the Tri-City Americans and later as head coach of the expansion Chilliwack team. He spent a year under Babcock in Detroit and followed him to Toronto, absorbing lessons from Babcock and later from Jacques Lemaire, who served as an advisor under Lou Lamoriello. When Lamoriello moved to the New York Islanders, he brought Hiller onto the staff alongside Gruden. Gruden said, "We've spent a lot of time away from the rink, we were close. He's a great hockey mind and he'll instill that type of culture and belief."

Hiller's collaborative approach was evident early in his coaching career. When he sought an assistant, he hired Price, a former goalie and career advisor who had left law practice. Price recalled, "I had a clean slate and I think Jim valued that, someone who'd work hard and learn the game the way he sees it. It was very much a collaborative vision."

Looking Ahead

The Leafs and Marlies will need to synchronize their systems under Hiller. With Gruden's extension discussions ongoing, the alignment between the NHL and AHL clubs is crucial. Hiller's ability to blend defensive structure with offensive creativity will be key to Toronto's success. As Price summarized, "He's uniquely suited to Toronto. When he speaks about the game, he reminds me a lot of Jon Cooper. He's not a linear thinker. The team and the fans will enjoy his style."
