Jordan Hansen, the 2021 Calgary Stampede bull-riding champion, is set to compete for another title this year in Pool B from Monday to Wednesday. The Okotoks native, now 32, recalls the thrill of winning the $50,000 prize and the hard work behind it. "Knowing the feeling of what it's like to hold the $50,000 cheque and all the work that goes into it, it's definitely something a guy was pretty happy with," Hansen said. "It's just where a guy wants to be again. Honestly, it's near and dear to my heart being that close to home."
Preparation at Cody Snyder Charity Bullbustin'
In the lead-up to the Stampede, Hansen has been showcasing his skills at the 2026 Cody Snyder Charity Bullbustin' at Grey Eagle Resort and Casino. After being bucked off Hood Mentality on Wednesday, he rebounded with an 83.9-point ride on Time To Twist the following night. "Lucky thing about here is I've got a few nights to redeem myself," said Hansen, who finished 10th out of 30 riders on Thursday. "Great pen of bulls and another great set of riders here." The event offers five nights of competition, which Hansen appreciates: "It's not too many times you see five nights with this amount of money added for us, so kudos to them."
National Standings and Canadian Contenders
Hansen currently sits fourth in the PBR Canada national standings behind Nick Tetz, Gilmar Santana, and Dakota Buttar. While he won't compete at the Stampede grounds until Monday, he will monitor Pool A competitors, particularly Canadians Jacob Gardner and Edgar Durazo. "It's just kind of a small group of Canadians, but all good guys and good bull riders," Hansen said. He noted Gardner, who finished second at the Ponoka Stampede Showdown Round behind Grady Young, as one to watch: "He's coming off a bit of an injury, but he's been riding lights out. He won Houston already this year, so he's seventh in the PRCA world standings." Durazo, originally from Moctezuma, Mexico, now lives in Speargrass, Alberta, and became a Canadian citizen last December. "We're going to claim him as a Canadian," Hansen said. "He's a two-time Canadian champion and Edgar's won a lot of big rodeos. If that guy gets on a hot streak, that's another guy to look for."
Pool B and Beyond
Hansen will compete in Pool B alongside fellow Canadian Grady Young, while Garrett Green is the lone Canadian in Pool C. The Calgary Stampede bull-riding competition runs from July 6 to 8 for Pool B, with the finals scheduled for later in the week.
