Don Mattingly Joins Phillies as Bench Coach, Reuniting with GM Son
Ex-Blue Jays Coach Mattingly Joins Phillies with Son

Veteran baseball figure Don Mattingly has swiftly found a new home in Major League Baseball, agreeing to become the bench coach for the Philadelphia Phillies. This move comes shortly after his departure from the Toronto Blue Jays following the conclusion of the 2025 World Series.

A Unique Family Reunion in Philadelphia

The hiring, which was confirmed by the Phillies in a release on January 5, 2026, presents a remarkable professional and personal opportunity for the 64-year-old Mattingly. He will now work directly under manager Rob Thomson and, in a rare baseball arrangement, alongside his son, Preston Mattingly, who serves as the Phillies' general manager.

Phillies manager Rob Thomson expressed his enthusiasm for the addition, highlighting their prior working relationship. "Having known Don for years and having worked closely with him in New York, I know that his knowledge of the game and his character make him a great addition to our tremendous coaching staff," Thomson stated.

Mattingly's Purposeful Tenure with the Blue Jays

Mattingly's exit from the Blue Jays organization, announced just days after the World Series ended, was not a shock to those within the club. According to Blue Jays manager John Schneider, Mattingly's primary role since joining Toronto before the 2023 season was to mentor Schneider and guide him through the complexities of big-league management.

Schneider revealed that Mattingly had communicated his future plans before the playoffs began. "Before the post-season even started, the way he put it was 'I've done everything that I can do for you and you don't need me. I am good with how I'm leaving this organization,'" Schneider recounted during the Winter Meetings in Orlando last month. Schneider added that Mattingly had identified "one opportunity, a really unique opportunity, to work with his son and (Thomson)."

A Legacy of Leadership Moves On

Nicknamed "Donnie Baseball," Mattingly brought a wealth of experience to the Blue Jays, having previously managed the Los Angeles Dodgers (2011-2015) and the Miami Marlins (2016-2022). His influence in Toronto was significant, with Schneider crediting him for making his job easier and becoming a lifelong friend.

"The situation worked out to where it was an opportunity that he couldn't pass up," Schneider said. "But I think he did it the right way. He put everything he had into every single day... I wish him nothing but the best. Can't wait to take him out to dinner at Spring Training."

The Phillies officially welcomed Mattingly to Philadelphia via social media, marking the next chapter for the respected coach and completing a heartwarming father-son storyline in the City of Brotherly Love.
