Toronto Blue Jays fans eager to see rising star Trey Yesavage in spring training action will have to wait a bit longer. Manager John Schneider announced that the 22-year-old pitcher will not take the mound in games until next week, as the team implements a cautious strategy to manage his development.
A Meteoric Rise Through the Ranks
Yesavage, a first-round pick in 2024, experienced a whirlwind ascent last season. Starting 2025 in single A, he quickly advanced through the minor leagues, ultimately earning two starts in the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. His performance showcased immense talent, but it also led to a significant workload increase.
In 2025, Yesavage pitched a total of 139.2 innings, a jump from 93.1 innings the previous year. This rapid progression has prompted the Blue Jays to adopt a more measured approach in 2026 to ensure his long-term health and effectiveness.
Strategic Management for Long-Term Success
Schneider explained the reasoning behind the slower ramp-up, citing the pitcher's transition from a long off-season after being drafted to a short one following his first full year. "Trying to be strategic, looking at the broad picture, I think it's unrealistic to say, 'Trey, first year in the big leagues, here's your 32 starts and your 200 innings,'" Schneider said, per reporter Shi Davidi. "We're trying to stay aware of that."
The manager also indicated that the team might seek opportunities during the regular season to provide Yesavage with extra rest. "There are probably going to be some times where you have to hone him in a little bit, and if you can manoeuvre the rotation a little bit, yeah, we'll do that," Schneider added. Yesavage has been participating in live sessions and side throws, with plans for another live session before game appearances, as the team prioritizes a mindful preparation process.
Blue Jays' Rotation Depth in 2026
Yesavage is expected to be a key component of Toronto's starting rotation this year, as the team aims to bounce back from a heartbreaking Game 7 loss in the 2025 World Series. The rotation boasts considerable depth, with returning pitchers Shane Bieber, Kevin Gausman, and Jose Berrios, alongside off-season acquisitions Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce.
Additionally, the Blue Jays could consider re-signing free agent Max Scherzer, who contributed significantly when healthy last season.
