The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is introducing a new tool that will enable staff to call out bad behavior in subway stations over the public address system. The initiative, announced on June 10, 2026, aims to enhance safety and deter misconduct such as fare evasion, harassment, and vandalism.
How It Works
Transit control operators will be able to make real-time announcements describing specific incidents and requesting that individuals cease their behavior. The system is designed to be a non-confrontational way to address issues without direct intervention by staff.
Implementation
The tool is being rolled out across all TTC subway stations over the coming weeks. Staff have been trained on when and how to use the announcements, which will be clear and concise to avoid confusion.
This move comes after a series of incidents on the TTC, including assaults and disturbances, which prompted calls for increased safety measures. The TTC has also increased security presence and installed more cameras.
Critics question whether the PA announcements will be effective, but TTC officials believe it will serve as a deterrent and empower staff to maintain order.
