A Life of Leadership and Legacy
Irving passed away peacefully at his home in Moncton, surrounded by his wife of 39 years, Jill, and their four children: Megan, Meredith, Olivia, and R.J. The family expressed immense gratitude for his leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment to the company's values, employees, customers, and communities.
In September 2025, the company announced that Irving had undergone surgery for cancer in July and was undergoing treatment. The specific type of cancer was not disclosed.

In 1977, Irving established J.D. Irving Ltd.'s operations in Moncton, where he resided for the remainder of his life. He served as co-CEO alongside his brother Jim Irving, who led operations while Robert received treatment. J.D. Irving employs approximately 20,000 people across diverse sectors, including agriculture, forestry, and shipbuilding.
Irving was awarded the Order of New Brunswick in 2024 for his profound community involvement, generosity, and exceptional altruism. He was also inducted into the New Brunswick Business Hall of Fame, the Canadian Agriculture Hall of Fame, and the P.E.I. Business Hall of Fame. In 2006, he founded the Moncton Wildcats Hockey Club, which went on to win three QMJHL championships.
