Israeli forces intercepted another boat carrying activists seeking to challenge the naval blockade of Gaza, detaining several Canadians among the crew, organizers said Sunday. The Global Sumud Flotilla, a coalition of international activists, had set sail from Marmaris, Turkey, on Thursday with a cargo of humanitarian aid, aiming to break the Israeli siege of the Palestinian territory.
Flotilla Details
The flotilla consisted of three vessels carrying medical supplies, educational materials, and other essential goods. Organizers said the mission was peaceful and intended to draw attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. However, Israeli naval forces intercepted the boats in international waters, according to the activists.
Detention of Canadians
Among those detained were several Canadian citizens, prompting a response from the Canadian government. Global Affairs Canada confirmed it was aware of the detentions and was providing consular assistance. The families of the detained Canadians expressed deep concern for their safety.
"We are in contact with Israeli authorities to ensure the well-being of our citizens and to secure their release," a spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada stated. The exact number of Canadians detained has not been officially disclosed.
International Reaction
The interception has drawn criticism from human rights groups, who called it a violation of international law. The United Nations has repeatedly called for an end to the blockade, which it says constitutes collective punishment of Gaza's civilian population. Israel defends the blockade as necessary to prevent weapons from reaching Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza.
"The blockade is illegal and inhumane," said a representative from the International Committee of the Red Cross. "We urge all parties to respect humanitarian principles and allow the free flow of aid."
Previous Incidents
This is not the first time such a flotilla has been intercepted. In 2010, Israeli commandos raided the Mavi Marmara, resulting in the deaths of nine Turkish activists and sparking a major diplomatic crisis. Since then, several smaller attempts to breach the blockade have been turned back by the Israeli navy.
The Global Sumud Flotilla is named after the Arabic word for steadfastness, a term often used to describe Palestinian resilience. Activists vowed to continue their efforts despite the interception.
Next Steps
The detained activists are expected to be transferred to an Israeli detention facility before being deported. Legal teams are working to secure their release. Meanwhile, the humanitarian aid on board will likely be transferred to Gaza through established channels, if allowed by Israeli authorities.
The incident underscores the ongoing tension surrounding the Gaza blockade, which has been in place since 2007 when Hamas took control of the territory. The blockade severely restricts the movement of people and goods, contributing to high unemployment and poverty rates in Gaza.
