Overview of Canada Day Operations in Montreal
On Canada Day (July 1, 2026), many businesses and public services in Montreal will operate on modified schedules. Residents and visitors should plan ahead for closures and limited hours at government offices, banks, postal outlets, and some retail stores. Public transit will run on a holiday schedule, and attractions may have special hours.
Government Services and Offices
All federal, provincial, and municipal government offices will be closed on Canada Day. This includes Service Canada, Revenu Québec, and the City of Montreal's administrative offices. Courts and libraries will also be closed. Mail delivery from Canada Post will not occur, and postal outlets will be closed.
Retail and Shopping
Most major grocery stores, pharmacies, and shopping malls will be closed on Canada Day. However, some convenience stores and smaller independent shops may remain open. According to the City of Montreal, large retailers such as Walmart and Costco will be closed. SAQ and SQDC outlets will be closed as well.
Public Transit
The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) will operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule for both metro and bus services. Exo commuter trains will also run on a reduced schedule. Riders are advised to check the STM website for route-specific timings.
Attractions and Entertainment
Many museums and cultural venues will be open on Canada Day, often with free admission or special events. The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Biodôme, and the Old Port will be open. The annual Canada Day fireworks at the Old Port are scheduled for 10 p.m., weather permitting.
Waste Collection and Parking
Garbage, recycling, and compost collection will be suspended on Canada Day. Collection will be delayed by one day for the rest of the week. Parking meters will not be enforced on the holiday, but all other parking regulations remain in effect.
