The City of Victoria is reviewing its security agreement with the Victoria Harbour Cats after a string of break-ins at Royal Athletic Park. The review comes in response to at least three separate incidents this year, according to city officials.
Break-ins prompt security review
Victoria Mayor Marianne Alto confirmed the review on Wednesday, stating that the city is evaluating the effectiveness of current security measures. The Harbour Cats, a baseball team that uses the park, are party to the agreement.
“We need to ensure that our facilities are secure for both the teams and the public,” Alto said. “This review will help us identify any gaps and address them promptly.”
The break-ins have raised concerns about vandalism and theft at the park, which hosts various events. Police are investigating the incidents, but no arrests have been made yet.
Details of incidents
According to Victoria Police, the break-ins occurred over the past two months, with the most recent happening last week. Thieves targeted storage areas and equipment sheds, making off with tools and supplies.
“We are working closely with the city and the Harbour Cats to enhance security,” said Constable Mike Russell. “We encourage anyone with information to come forward.”
The total value of stolen property has not been disclosed, but city officials estimate damages to be in the thousands of dollars.
Impact on upcoming events
The Royal Athletic Park is scheduled to host several major events this summer, including Harbour Cats games and community festivals. City staff are assessing whether the security issues could affect these events.
“We are committed to maintaining a safe environment for all users,” said city parks director Sarah Jones. “We will implement any necessary changes before the next scheduled event.”
The Harbour Cats have expressed concern over the incidents and are cooperating fully with the review. “We want our fans to feel safe when they come to the park,” said team spokesperson Tom Li. “We support the city’s efforts to improve security.”
