Matthew Sexton, returner for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, scored his first career CFL touchdown in Week 5, describing the achievement as a "full circle moment." The touchdown came during the Riders' game against the Toronto Argonauts at Mosaic Stadium.
Journey to the CFL
Sexton, who played college football at Eastern Michigan University, signed with the Riders as a free agent in 2025. He spent the early part of the season as a kick returner before earning more offensive snaps. His touchdown came on a 75-yard punt return in the second quarter, giving the Riders a 14-7 lead.
"It's a moment I've been dreaming about since I was a kid," Sexton said after the game. "To do it in front of the Rider Nation, it's just surreal." According to the Riders, Sexton averaged 12.4 yards per punt return entering Week 5.
Full Circle Moment
Sexton credited his family and coaches for helping him reach the CFL. "My dad used to take me to Riders games when I was little," he said. "Now to be playing for them and scoring a touchdown, it's a full circle moment." The Riders went on to win the game 27-24.
