TTC Subway Heroes: Quick-Thinking Journalists Help Save Man on Tracks
TTC Subway Heroes: Journalists Help Save Man on Tracks

A potential disaster was averted at Donlands Station when a man jumped onto the subway tracks and began walking into the tunnel, carrying what appeared to be a red gas can. Independent journalist and lawyer Caryma Sa'd and her videographer Lee witnessed the incident and took immediate action to save the man's life and ensure the safety of others.

Swift Response Prevents Tragedy

Sa'd and Lee spotted the man descending to track level and heard Lee passionately urging, "Don't do it, man." The individual then disappeared into the darkness between the tracks. Recognizing the danger, Sa'd noted that TTC security personnel appeared distressed. The third rail carries lethal electricity, and an incoming train could have been fatal.

Emergency Protocols Activated

Lee and Sa'd knew exactly what to do. They located the emergency button on the station wall, which stops all train movement in and out of the station. "We cut the power," Sa'd said. She then used a special emergency phone to contact an operator for help. TTC safety staff, special constables, and Toronto Police responded swiftly, walking the tunnel and detaining the man. The red object turned out to be a bag of personal belongings, not a threat.

Heroes Without Capes

Sa'd and Lee, known for covering protests and street events, have faced assaults themselves but continue their courageous work. Their quick thinking and action prevented a catastrophe. Both were humble, praising the police and TTC for their efficiency and compassion. "They all did such a great job," Sa'd said. "They didn't hesitate."

The man was removed from the platform, interviewed, and offered medical assistance. Toronto Police have not commented on the investigation, but TTC spokesperson Stuart Green confirmed the incident caused a 15-minute delay with shuttle buses deployed between Woodbine and Broadview. The trespasser was found about 100 meters into the tunnel and brought back safely.

Lessons for Public Safety

Green emphasized that the observer did the right thing by cutting power and calling it in, ensuring everyone's safety. The incident highlights the importance of knowing emergency procedures and the potential need for platform safety barriers to prevent such occurrences. Sa'd and Lee's actions not only saved a life but also provided a tutorial on how to respond in similar situations.

As journalists, they still managed to capture video and photos of the event. Their satisfaction comes from knowing their actions ensured no one died. This real-life drama showcased their heroism and commitment to Toronto's safety.
