Sault Ste. Marie Boardwalk Assault: Another Teen Charged

A third teenager has been charged in connection with a violent assault on the St. Mary's River Waterfront Boardwalk in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, police announced Wednesday. The case, which initially involved two suspects, has expanded as investigators continue to gather evidence and identify additional participants.

Details of the Charges

The latest suspect, a 17-year-old whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, faces charges of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon. Police allege the teen was involved in the June 2026 attack that left a 45-year-old victim with serious injuries. Two other teens, aged 16 and 17, were previously charged in connection with the same incident. All three are scheduled to appear in court in August 2026.

Police Investigation and Community Response

Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Detective Constable Mike Smith said in a statement, “We are committed to thoroughly investigating this incident and ensuring all those responsible are held accountable. The community can expect a continued police presence along the boardwalk to ensure public safety.”

The assault has sparked concern among residents and business owners along the popular waterfront area, which sees heavy foot traffic during summer months. Local councillor Lisa Vezeau-Allen called for increased lighting and security cameras, stating, “We need to make sure our public spaces are safe for everyone.”

Police have not disclosed whether the suspects and victim knew each other, citing the ongoing investigation.
