Penetanguishene Lowers Flags After Former Councillor Levy Dies

The Town of Penetanguishene has lowered its flags to half-mast in honour of former councillor Debbie Levy, who died recently at the age of 75. Levy served on town council for 16 years, from 2006 to 2022, representing Ward 1.

Longtime Community Advocate

Levy was known for her dedication to local issues, including waterfront development, affordable housing, and community safety. She also volunteered with numerous organizations, such as the Penetanguishene Hospital Foundation and the local food bank. Mayor Doug Rawson described her as a passionate advocate who always put the community first.

“Debbie was a tireless servant to Penetanguishene. Her contributions to our town will not be forgotten,” Rawson said in a statement. Flags at the town hall and other municipal buildings will remain at half-mast until sunset on the day of her funeral.

Legacy of Service

Levy was first elected in 2006 and re-elected in 2010, 2014, and 2018. She chose not to seek re-election in 2022. During her tenure, she sat on several committees, including the police services board and the library board. She also served as deputy mayor for a term.

Residents have taken to social media to share memories of Levy’s kindness and dedication. One former constituent recalled how Levy personally helped her navigate a zoning issue. “She was always available to listen and help,” the resident wrote.

The town is planning a memorial service to celebrate Levy’s life, with details to be announced in the coming days. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Penetanguishene Hospital Foundation.
