Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante confirmed that 66 families were relocated on July 1, 2026, as evictions during the annual moving day exceeded last year's figures. The announcement came during a press conference where the mayor highlighted the ongoing housing crisis in the city.
Eviction Numbers Climb
According to the mayor's office, the number of evictions on moving day this year surpassed 2025 totals, though specific comparative figures were not immediately released. The 66 relocated families were assisted by municipal services and community organizations. Plante stated, "We are doing everything we can to support families facing eviction, but the demand is outpacing our resources."
City Response and Support
The city has implemented emergency measures, including temporary housing vouchers and increased funding for tenant advocacy groups. Plante called on the provincial government to strengthen rent control laws and increase social housing investments. "We need a coordinated effort to address the root causes of this crisis," she said.
Community groups have criticized the pace of action, noting that many families are left without stable housing. The mayor acknowledged the challenges but emphasized progress, saying, "Every family relocated is a family we've helped avoid homelessness."
