Montreal will celebrate Canada Day on July 1 with fireworks at the Old Port, while many municipal services will be closed or operate on reduced hours. The city has released its annual list of what's open and closed for the holiday.
Fireworks and Festivities
The city is launching fireworks for Canada Day. Residents and visitors can watch them at the Old Port, where the main festivities will take place. The event is free and open to the public, with activities scheduled throughout the day.
Municipal Services
All municipal offices, including city hall and borough offices, will be closed on Canada Day. Garbage and recycling collection will be postponed by one day for the remainder of the week. Ecocentres will be closed, but some will reopen on July 2.
Public Transit
The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) will operate on a holiday schedule. Metro service will run from about 8:30 a.m. to 1 a.m., with reduced frequency on most lines. Bus service will also follow a holiday schedule. The Réseau express métropolitain (REM) will run on a weekend schedule.
Libraries and Cultural Venues
All public libraries will be closed on Canada Day. Some cultural venues, such as the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Pointe-à-Callière Museum, will be open with regular hours. The Montreal Science Centre will also be open.
Recreation and Sports
Indoor and outdoor pools will be open on a holiday schedule. Sports centres and arenas will be closed. Parks and green spaces will remain open for public use.
Commercial Establishments
Most grocery stores, shopping malls, and retail outlets will be closed on Canada Day. However, some convenience stores and pharmacies may remain open. Restaurants and bars will operate on their own schedules.
Parking and Road Closures
Parking meters will not be in effect on Canada Day. Several streets in the Old Port area will be closed to traffic for the fireworks display. Drivers are advised to plan alternate routes.
Health Services
Hospitals and urgent care clinics will remain open. The CIUSSS du Centre-Sud-de-l'Île-de-Montréal advises residents to call 811 for non-emergency health concerns.
