Edmonton Iranian Community Plans Major Rally Supporting Regime Change in Iran

Members of Edmonton's Iranian community are preparing for what organizers describe as a "massive" rally this Sunday, aimed at showing solidarity with protesters in Iran and advocating for regime change. The event is scheduled to take place at Sir Winston Churchill Square at 1 p.m., with expectations of a large turnout from Edmontonians joining thousands across Canada in support of democratic reforms in Iran.

Organizers Anticipate Historic Turnout

Dr. Adrian Norbash of Iranian Patriots YEG expressed optimism about the rally's scale, stating, "It may turn out to be the biggest rally in Edmonton the Iranian community has had." He emphasized the community's call for a humanitarian military intervention, highlighting the dire situation in Iran. "The population of Iran are unarmed and they are facing one of the most repressive, yet organized and ruthless dictatorships in history. They’ve been doing it empty-handed and they’ve been dying by the thousands," Norbash added, underscoring the urgency of the cause.

International Context and Hopes for Change

The rally comes amid recent geopolitical developments, including air strikes on Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's compound, with early reports suggesting his death. Norbash, a Canadian Forces veteran who served in Afghanistan, believes that with air support from the United States and Israel, the people of Iran could rise up to end Khamenei's reign. He referenced exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi's call for Iranians to "seize city centres," expressing faith that this will happen in the coming days.

Despite initial surprise at U.S. President Donald Trump's recent controversial statements, Norbash sees his mention of "regime change" as a pivotal moment. "When the world’s greatest superpower and the greatest military power in the region say that their aim is to topple this regime, anything short of that would be essentially a defeat for them and a victory for the Islamic Republic," he explained. He warned that failure to act now could have long-lasting consequences, stating, "If we fail now, it may be done for generations. An opportunity like this may not come again."

Historical Background of Iranian Governance

Iran has been under the rule of the Islamic Republic since the 1979 revolution, which overthrew the western-backed Shah. Prior to that, the Shah was recognized as absolute monarch, supported by a 1953 British-U.S. coup d’etat authorized by Prime Minister Winston Churchill and President Dwight Eisenhower. This followed the nationalization of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company by Iranian Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh, marking a key moment in Iran's political history.

Community Mobilization and Media Coverage

The Edmonton Iranian community has previously rallied in support of democratic reforms, such as a gathering in Wilbert McIntyre Park in January 2026. The upcoming event is part of a broader movement across Canada, reflecting the diaspora's deep ties to their homeland and commitment to change. The Edmonton Journal plans to provide coverage of the rally, highlighting its significance in the context of ongoing protests in Iran and international responses.

As the community prepares for Sunday, organizers stress the importance of this moment in potentially shaping Iran's future, urging global attention and action to support the unarmed populace facing repression.
