Hamilton Police are investigating the death of a cyclist found near Brantford on Thursday morning. The discovery was made in a rural area off Highway 24, according to police reports.
Police Respond to Discovery
Officers were called to the scene around 8 a.m. after a passerby reported an unresponsive individual on the side of the road. The cyclist, whose identity has not been released pending notification of family, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detective Sergeant Mark Taylor of the Hamilton Police Service stated, "We are treating this as an unexplained death. Our investigators are working to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident." He added that there is no immediate indication of foul play.
Investigation Ongoing
The region has experienced extreme heat warnings in recent days, with humidex values reaching the 40s across southern Ontario. Police have not ruled out heat-related causes but are awaiting autopsy results from the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
Brantford police assisted Hamilton officers in securing the area and conducting a preliminary search. The investigation is ongoing, and police are appealing for witnesses who may have been in the area between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. on July 2.
