Canada's 159th birthday lands on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, creating a mid-week statutory holiday rather than a long weekend. Many residents will celebrate locally, and a wide range of services, attractions, and retail outlets will be operating across Metro Vancouver.
Retail and Shopping Malls
Most major shopping centres and big-box stores will be open on Canada Day, often with regular or Sunday hours. Cadillac Fairview's Pacific Centre in downtown Vancouver will operate from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., while CF Richmond Centre is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Metropolis at Metrotown in Burnaby and Park Royal in West Vancouver will also welcome shoppers from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. McArthurGlen designer outlet near Vancouver International Airport will run on regular hours, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Grocery chains including Walmart, Real Canadian Superstore, Save-On-Foods, and Safeway are largely open, but Costco warehouse locations will be closed for the holiday.
Attractions and Cultural Venues
Popular tourist attractions around Vancouver will operate as usual. The Vancouver Art Gallery, Science World, and the Vancouver Aquarium are all open. City-run attractions such as VanDusen Botanical Garden (9 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and Bloedel Conservatory (10 a.m. to 7 p.m.) will keep regular hours. The Museum of Anthropology at UBC will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Capilano Suspension Bridge Park in North Vancouver will operate from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Recreation and Community Centres
Only a handful of Vancouver community centres will be open on Canada Day, including False Creek, Hastings, Kerrisdale, Mount Pleasant, and Roundhouse. Many fitness centres will offer gym time, though some will be closed. City pools open on Wednesday include Britannia, Hillcrest, Kitsilano, Lord Byng, Maple Grove, New Brighton, Renfrew, Second Beach, and Templeton Park. Most municipal ice rinks and golf courses—Fraserview, Langara, and McCleery—will be operational. For specific hours, visit vancouver.ca.
All Vancouver Public Library branches are closed on Canada Day except the Carnegie branch on Main Street, which remains open every day.
Transit Services
TransLink will operate buses, SkyTrain, and SeaBus on a holiday schedule with single-zone fares across the system. The West Coast Express commuter train will not run. TransLink customer service centres and lost property offices will be closed.
