Canada Day Fireworks Return to Ottawa for 2026
The annual Canada Day fireworks display will illuminate the Ottawa sky on July 1, 2026, with the main show launching from LeBreton Flats Park and the Ottawa River. The event, organized by the National Capital Commission (NCC), is expected to draw tens of thousands of spectators to the downtown core and surrounding areas.
Schedule and Timing
Fireworks are scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. EDT, following a day of festivities including concerts, cultural performances, and citizenship ceremonies. The display will last approximately 20 minutes, featuring synchronized pyrotechnics set to music. In case of inclement weather, the NCC has identified July 2 as a backup date.
Best Viewing Locations
Prime viewing areas include LeBreton Flats Park, the Ottawa River pathway, and Parliament Hill. The NCC recommends arriving early, as popular spots fill up by mid-afternoon. Accessible viewing zones will be available near the Canadian War Museum and along the Portage Bridge.
Traffic and Transit
OC Transpo will run extra buses and O-Train service until 1 a.m. on July 2. Several downtown roads, including Wellington Street and Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway, will close from 6 p.m. to midnight. The NCC advises using public transit or cycling to avoid congestion.
Safety and Regulations
Personal fireworks, drones, and open flames are prohibited in all official viewing areas. The Ottawa Police Service will enforce a temporary alcohol ban in certain parks. Attendees should bring blankets, sunscreen, and water, as no glass containers are allowed.
Historical Context
According to the NCC, Canada Day fireworks have been a tradition in Ottawa since 1981. The 2026 show will feature new effects and a tribute to the country's 159th anniversary. Organizers expect over 300,000 visitors to the capital for the long weekend.
