Burst Pipe Triggers Flooding Incident Under Van Horne Overpass in Montreal
A ruptured pipe was responsible for causing water to flow through the Van Horne overpass onto a pedestrian walkway along a major artery in Montreal on Thursday. The incident prompted emergency responses and temporary road closures to ensure public safety.
Emergency Response and Initial Reports
William Murray, the section chief for the Montreal fire department, confirmed that they received a call around 9:20 a.m. on Thursday regarding a burst pipe located at 1 Van Horne Ave., adjacent to the overpass over St-Laurent Blvd. in the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough. Fire department personnel were dispatched to the scene in the morning, although jurisdiction for managing the issue ultimately fell to the borough teams.
Scene Description and Impact
By noon on Thursday, water was observed flowing down the wall of the pedestrian walkway and onto St-Laurent Blvd. on the west side of the overpass. The pedestrian walkway on St-Laurent was blocked with caution tape at both the north and south sides, specifically at Bellechasse St. and Van Horne Ave. Additionally, one of the car lanes on St-Laurent next to the leakage was closed off with orange cones around noon. A nearby fire hydrant also had water flooding out of it, exacerbating the situation.
Authorities' Actions and Statements
Geneviève Allard, spokesperson for the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough, stated that police officers and borough teams were on site Thursday morning. Police temporarily closed the road to traffic to ensure safety, with the road reopening at approximately 11:15 a.m. After inspection, crews confirmed that the leak originated from a private building on private property, with water flowing under the viaduct. Our crews closed the valve and cleared the sump under the viaduct to allow the water to drain properly, Allard wrote in an email statement.
Infrastructure Damage and Repairs
Allard noted that the abundance of water caused potholes to appear in the area. Asphalt crews were dispatched to the scene to make necessary repairs, with police officers remaining on site to direct traffic, keeping one lane open. The flooding appeared to be over by 1:45 p.m., indicating a swift resolution to the incident.
Community and Safety Measures
The rapid response from emergency services and borough teams helped mitigate potential hazards, ensuring minimal disruption to traffic and pedestrian safety. This event highlights the importance of infrastructure maintenance and prompt action in urban settings to address such emergencies effectively.
