Brampton Victoria Day Chaos: 13 Charged, Fireworks Used as Weapons
Brampton Victoria Day Chaos Leads to 13 Charges

Victoria Day celebrations in Brampton escalated into chaos Monday night, prompting Peel Regional Police to shut down Chinguacousy Park due to large, unsafe gatherings and the dangerous use of fireworks. Officers cleared the area and laid charges against 13 individuals after thousands had congregated, with some allegedly discharging fireworks at others.

Police Response and Charges

Peel Police Const. Tyler Bell-Morena explained that using fireworks against a person is considered a weapon under the Criminal Code. Charges include possession of weapons dangerous, possession of explosives for a dangerous purpose, drug offences, and seizure of replica firearms. Those charged were primarily aged 18 to 26, with one 17-year-old also facing charges.

Large-Scale Disturbance

Approximately 35 additional officers were deployed to the park as the situation escalated. At one point, over 2,000 people were present, many setting off fireworks at each other. Fires were inadvertently started, and people ran into traffic to escape the fireworks, leading to the closure of Queen Street.

Bell-Morena noted that the park has seen previous incidents, including a shooting last summer where officers were nearly struck. He emphasized the need for preventive measures ahead of Canada Day and other large festivities.
