Three people are dead after an SUV collided with a semi-truck north of Edmonton on Friday, July 10, 2026. The crash occurred on Highway 44 near the town of Gibbons, approximately 30 kilometers northeast of Edmonton.
Details of the crash
RCMP responded to the scene around 1:30 p.m. after receiving reports of a serious collision. Investigators determined that an SUV traveling southbound crossed the center line and struck a northbound semi-truck head-on. The impact killed all three occupants of the SUV instantly. The driver of the semi-truck was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
“Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the deceased,” said RCMP Cpl. Janelle Shoihet in a statement. “We are working to determine the cause of the collision.”
Investigation underway
Highway 44 was closed for several hours as collision analysts examined the scene. RCMP have not released the identities of the victims pending notification of next of kin. It is not yet known whether alcohol, speed, or distraction were factors in the crash.
The incident is the latest in a series of fatal collisions on Alberta highways this year. According to RCMP data, there have been 42 traffic fatalities in the province in 2026 as of July 10, compared to 38 at the same time last year.
Community response
Gibbons Mayor John Acheson expressed condolences, saying, “This is a tragic loss of life. Our community stands with the families affected by this terrible accident.” The crash remains under investigation.
